There is no country in the word except Sweden to have such a rich and comprehensive collection of medieval liturgical art. The Gothic style came to Sweden during the second half of the 13th century. Linkoping Cathedral is mostly conducted in English Gothic style and contains richly decorated sculptures.

The Vasa period of art comprised mostly of portraits of princes. The popular belief is that foreign artists who were active in Sweden have painted the arts. Urban Larsson in the Great Church in Stockholm was an exception. He is one of the few well-known Swedish artists during the Vasa period and the Renaissance era. The 17th and 18th century were the primary age of architecture. According the portraits available in museum reveal that there were a number of castles, mansions and churches in that era like the Royal Palace. This is believed that artists were called from abroad.

During the mid-19th century and a few decades later, there has been an age of nature paintings which dominated the scene. Marcus Larsson was in the lead. The two most popular artists that brought something new to this age were Carl Fredrik Hill and Egron Lundgren. Egron Lundberg invented the watercolor art. He was inspired for this invention as he had to travel extensive in Europe and Asia and he painted his findings. During this period, Carl Gustav Hellquist Gustaf and Cederstrom did many history paintings.
